“Queerceñera” is giving LGBTQ+ Latine people a chance to have the Quinceañera they’ve dreamed of. The Quinceañera is a long-standing tradition for girls in the Latinx community, celebrating the 15th birthday of young females as their entry into womanhood with an often lavish party and iconic giant ball gown for the honoree. But for non-binary and trans individuals, this significant milestone is usually “denied,” as they are considered for “women only” by the community. But The Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity in Mississippi gave those who have been excluded the chance to celebrate with the first-ever “Queerceñera,” held last month for the “indigenous and trans and gender non-conforming people [who] deserve quinceañeras.” The event welcomed dozens of attendees who experienced the rituals they’ve been left out of among an accepting community, and could become a new tradition.
