Asian Americans face longer periods of unemployment, and labor market challenges compared to other ethnic and racial groups. According to the Labor Department, Asian workers in the U.S. had an employment rate of 3.1% in April compared to the overall unemployment rate of 3.6% and the White employment rate of 3.2%. However, labor market statistics suggest that Asian Americans “sugar from long-term joblessness more than other workers.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median unemployment for Asian Americans was 21.9 weeks in 2021, which is the longest period of any racial or ethnic group. Asian men saw a media period of joblessness of 2.61 weeks. YPulse’s Employment and Careers survey shows that roughly 50% of Asian 13-39-year-olds are currently employed, compared to 59% of White/non-Hispanics. (CNBC)
