Twitter’s “work from anywhere” model helped the company boost the hiring of Black and Latinx employees.

Twitter’s “work from anywhere” model helped the company boost the hiring of Black and Latinx employees. YPulse’s What’s Next From Work trend report found that more than half of young BIPOC consumers would enjoy working at a job more if it implemented a work from home / remote model, and Twitter announced that their “work from home” policy combined with their initiative to hire more people of color gave them a boost in new hires of Black and Latinx employees. According to the company, the share of Black workers among their U.S. workforce jumped from 6.9% in 2020 to 9.4% in 2021, while Latinx workers jumped from 5.5% to 8% during the same period. Last year, Twitter required that the final slate of job candidates for positions above entry-level roles in the U.S. should include at least one woman and one person of color. The company compared their updated guidelines to the “Rooney Rule” in the NFL, which requires teams with top coaching vacancies to consider at least one Black candidate. According to Twitter’s VP of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility: “In an all-virtual environment there are very few limitations to where we can show up to meet talent as a company. We were able to hire folks in markets that we know have high populations of Black talent, markets that we know have high populations of Latinx talent.” (Bloomberg)
