Young Black athletes are leading a “mental health revolution.”

Aug 03 2021

Young Black athletes are leading a “mental health revolution.” From Naomi Osaka dropping out of the French Open to Sha’Carri Richardson using marijuana to cope with grief, to Simone Biles withdrawing from her Olympic event, more young Black athletes in elite sports have been opening up about their mental health struggles, “taking ownership of their personal narrative, and making their own choices about sharing that personal narrative.” According to experts, while such mental health issues aren’t uncommon among Black athletes, the willingness to speak so openly about them and publicly advocate for better care is new in the world of professional sports. According to data from Athletes for Hope, up to 35% of pro athletes will face a mental health crisis, and YPulse’s State of Mind trend research found that 67% of 13-39-year-olds constantly feel stressed, while 75% say they often feel overwhelmed—and they want mental health to be a public discussion.
