Pinterest is banning all weight loss ads. The app has officially updated its guidelines to ban weight loss ads altogether, a move that was guided by The National Eating Disorders Association. Pinterest has existing bans on before-and-after weight loss imagery and ads for weight loss procedures, but this is the first time a social media platform has banned weight loss ads entirely. Ads promoting healthy lifestyles and fitness services are still allowed—the emphasis here being healthy. Meanwhile, Norway legislation is going even further with a new law that will require advertisers and influencers to label images where a person’s body, shape, size, or skin has been retouched. YPulse’s advertising and marketing research shows that 52% of Gen Z say that brands using Photoshop is a negative, and inclusivity/acceptance in marketing is vital now more than ever when it comes to protecting consumers (especially youth) from toxic messaging surrounding the body.
