As movies head back to the theaters this summer, at-home streaming isn’t going anywhere. According to a survey from TV Time, a television-tracking app, people’s preferences for watching movies in the theater compared to at-home is somewhat split. For new films like Marvel’s, Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, 68% and 64% (respectively) of U.S. TV Time users say they want to watch the films in a theater. But when it comes to more family-friendly flicks like Warner Bros.’ Space Jam: A New Legacy, 69% say they would prefer to watch it at home. Family-friendly titles skewed toward watching “at-home” while Marvel’s new titles had a stronger response for being viewed in a theater for the cinematic experience. At the end of 2020, YPulse found that 68% of 16-34-year-olds said they would watch a movie on an at-home streaming platform if a film was released in both the movie theater and on a streaming platform. As of now, Marvel doesn’t have plans to release its films on Disney+ at the same time of their premiere, but Warner Bros. announced earlier this year that it will release its entire list of 2021 films to streaming at the time of their premiere in theaters.
