College students are unionizing on campuses during the pandemic. During COVID, some universities cut costs by cutting and downsizing their number of resident advisors, peer mentors, and other campus-related student jobs. But because many students rely on these jobs for basic expenses and access to stable housing, they’ve begun to take “collective action.” Students across various campuses are joining their college’s unions to attend bargaining sessions to negotiate with admins as well as organize strikes and pickets. But because it’s still difficult for some students to start a union, coalitions like the Undergraduate Workers Union (UWU) are tackling the issue at a “macro level” by hosting conventions and providing resources like advising for undergraduate labor organizers. Gen Z has been struggling with their pandemic college experience, and their future goals are being shaped by this event. (Teen Vogue)
