Spotify is putting sports and esports content on the forefront of their digital audio strategy. In recent years, Spotify’s mission has changed from centering on music streaming and expanded into a platform for all types of audio. By investing hundreds of millions of dollars in acquiring podcast production companies, they’re looking to “benefit from established audiences” of sports content. Instead of presenting commentaries and live formats, they want to build a “library of on-demand content with a longer shelf life” and become a “sports lifestyle” hub. They’ve even set up an esports partnership with Riot Games as the official partner for League of Legends where they will feature new music, podcasts, and playlists. (Forbes)
