Twitch users have streamed a whopping 2 billion hours of gaming during the COVID crisis. It’s no secret that gaming has seen a significant boost during lockdown, and esports viewing is experiencing its own boom with average viewers on the site growing to 2.8 million—more than double the user number from this time in 2019. Sports fans could be contributing to the viewing increase, with athletes and fans looking to fill the competition void turning to esports. Apps and sites that allow players to compete for cash, like Play One Up, are also seeing a surge in use, as users try to “make money doing something they enjoy.” (Quartz, WSJ)
