Teens scribbling out their faces has become a social media norm. Pictures with scribbled-over or emoji-covered areas of users’ faces and bodies are all over social media, and one 16-year-old explains why: “I scribble out my face in photos where I like my body but not my face, or if I like the background of the photo and it goes with my feed.” While the practice stems from insecurities, it isn’t so different (and is perhaps more honest) than using editing tools like Facetune—which some teens switch to as they get older.
