A school made an app to gamify academic performance, and 30,000 students have voluntarily logged on—in its first semester alone. Strides is available to all 58,000 students in the Fresno Unified School District, and rewards them each time they log on the student portal to access the app and check their stats. They also earn points for attendance, GPA, extracurricular activities, and more. Some students say they’re hooked, and developers are working hard to keep “the cool factor” by adding Easter eggs, and using a “stealth rollout” that kept teachers totally in the dark, letting students discover it via word-of-mouth alone.
