Another app is trying to change how Gen Z feels about dating. Hoppy ditches the traditional swiping for a Pinterest-like interface where users can build their profiles around things that make them who they are, whether that’s “a favorite album, a go-to jogging route, a running joke, or a movie they can’t stop quoting.” Users can also choose how they want to communicate, with options including text, photos, videos, music, and voice notes. The goal is to help young people show off their authentic selves while making profiles harder for chatbots to fake—music to Gen Z’s ears! And the app has already generated major buzz, reportedly attracting 50K people to its waitlist before major press coverage. But the frenzy behind the app just might be too good to be true: Hoppy appears to be getting help from stealth UGC, a.k.a. a network of TikTok accounts posting positive “non-ad” videos about the app that are actually paid promos.
