Gen Z’s newest dating rule is “chalance.”

Jun 30 2026

Gen Z’s newest dating rule is “chalance.” Young people are tired of going on dates with people who pose themselves as indifferent, carefree, and too cool. According to YPulse’s Dating and Relationships report, 77% of 20-29-year-olds agree, “Dating is more difficult than it was in the past”—and nonchalant daters could have something to do with that. Instead, they want a match who is enthusiastic, yearning, and willing to put in effort—or rather, someone who is “chalant.” Social media has fueled this conversation and the broader “chalance” trend. Young people have taken to TikTok to discuss their opinions on how nonchalance has ruined the dating scene—and many now agree that showing effort is in and being casually detached is out.
