Roblox is cleaning up profanity in chats with AI (instead of censoring it). Previously, a swear word in age-verified, young users’ text chats would be overridden with a string of hashtags. Now, the game is hoping to keep the original intention of a message by swapping or erasing swears (with a notification to the text chat that it’s been altered). The aim is to minimize confusion between players and interruptions to gameplay, and ultimately phase out the hashtag censor completely. The AI system that identifies and moderates is even trained to decode the workarounds players use, like replacing letters with symbols. (Though it’s unclear if the AI’s contextual knowledge will also understand all the algorithm-censored slang terms Gen Z has developed online.) Of course, this is only for text channels within the game and for users with an accurate age profile, so it doesn’t prevent the language showing up in other chat platforms. (Dexerto)
