YouTube is investing in programming to become Gen Z’s top streaming service. At its first-ever Creator Premieres showcase, the platform announced a slate of new shows from stand-up specials to wilderness adventures. One big launch is playing off the existing viral channel “Recess Therapy” with Outside Tonight, a weekly late-night series hosted by influencer Julian Shapiro-Barnum, which will be filmed in public parks instead of studios. While traditional late-night shows continue to struggle with declining ratings, Gen Z is watching tons of talk shows on YouTube, so they’re moving to make it more official. The platform’s strategy is leaning into Gen Z’s viewing habits, as YouTube has maintained its two-year streak as the #1 streaming platform on TV screens among total U.S. viewers, holding a 12.6% share of total TV viewing time in September, compared to Netflix’s 8.3%.
