San Francisco’s new “AI-powered” private school claims students can learn in just two hours a day. Alpha School, which opened this fall with K-8 students, uses AI-driven software to personalize lessons so kids spend far less time on traditional subjects each day. Once that two hours is up, the rest of the day is dedicated to creative activities learning life skills that promote teamwork and financial literacy. And despite the school’s $10K tuition—the highest in San Francisco—it has attracted 25 families so far. The institution is positioning itself as an elite experiment with students already reportedly scoring in the top 1-2% of testing nationally. But experts say the self-directed model isn’t new and doesn’t work for every kid. Even OpenAI researcher Rose Wang notes that younger students and those needing more support benefit from collaborative, in-person methods that AI can’t replicate. (The Guardian)
