An algorithm experiment turned “Group 7” into a viral inside joke.

Oct 23 2025

An algorithm experiment turned “Group 7” into a viral inside joke. The craze started when singer Sophia James uploaded seven different TikToks to test the algorithm for her new song “So Unfair,” seeing how many (or who) each reached. The seventh post, labeling viewers as “Group 7,” went most viral—pulling in 8.5M views and turning a data experiment into a fandom-generating moment. Users proudly claimed their “group” status, deciding that Group 7 was “the elite,” and even brands and celebs like Naomi Osaka and the Kansas City Chiefs joined in. By calling out directly that her viewers were brought together by the algorithm, James turned passive scrolling into playful participation—and not for exclusivity, but for belonging. YPulse recently dug into Gen Z’s complicated relationship with targeted social algorithms, but this trends manages to make “random” placement feel like community. (TODAY)
