SHEIN is planning to make its first permanent stores in France and it’s sparking backlash.

Oct 15 2025

SHEIN is planning to make its first permanent stores in France and it’s sparking backlash. The brand is planning to open its first-ever permanent stores this November inside BHV and Galeries Lafayette, aimed at attracting younger shoppers. But this move has ignited strong opposition from retailers and officials—including Paris’ mayor, who called it a threat to “sustainable local commerce.” The push into physical retail marks a risky shift for the brand from its online-only model, as France has become one of the toughest markets for fast fashion, both culturally and legally. Lawmakers are already backing a bill that could ban the brand from advertising in France. While Gen Z remains the brand’s biggest audience, French youth are also leading the slow-fashion countertrend, favoring resale, upcycling, and ethical labels. (Reuters)
