Gap x Sandy Liang’s anime ad taps nostalgia to connect with young viewers. “Sandy’s Dream Closet” stars a young girl, modeled after Liang herself, who discovers her closet has magical powers, transforming her Sailor Moon-style into Gap x Sandy Liang looks. The animation captures Liang’s New York childhood, set above a Cantonese restaurant inspired by her father’s actual establishment, Congee Village. With pieces ranging from $15-$268, the collection embodies what Liang calls designs “for your inner child.” Surrealist animator Annie Choi, who has worked with Hermès and Dior, said the animation centers around Liang’s style of “imagination, nostalgia, and a sense of wonder.” The spot is meant to feel personal and rooted in genuine cultural touchpoints rather than focused on products, and with the popularity of advertainment right now, could become much more than a promotion.
