Gen Z boys are feeling the effects of toxic algorithms.

Oct 15 2025

Gen Z boys are feeling the effects of toxic algorithms. For this gen, algorithms are the sources shaping identity and behavior during a critical developmental stage. A new Common Sense Media survey finds 73% of 11-17-year-old boys regularly see “digital masculinity” content—posts about fighting, money, or muscle building—often without searching for it. And boys heavily exposed to this material report lower self-esteem, more loneliness, and greater reluctance to show emotion than those who don’t. Nearly 70% of all boys say they see messages that reinforce gender stereotypes and 91% encounter appearance-related content, like pressure to have clear skin or dress “masculine.” Experts warn that social media is teaching boys that toughness equals value and vulnerability equals weakness, which drives mental health issues offline.
