A recent study has found that 31% of Americans are mooching off of someone else’s Netflix account. Not surprisingly, young viewers make up a large portion of that group: 69% of 13-17-year-olds, and 50% of 18-24-year-olds do not pay for their Netflix account. Although Netflix has subscription options for account sharing, a report estimated the streaming video industry loses $500 million a year on freeloading users. Netflix however isn’t worried: CEO Reed Hastings has called it “a positive thing,” and is betting on young viewers to eventually become paying subscribers when they have more disposable income.
