Welcome to the age of the Millennial sitcom.

Welcome to the age of the Millennial sitcom. Viewers have always been able to rely on reoccurring plotline themes in sitcoms, like the complicated “will they or won’t they” story. Now—thanks in part to the ability to create sitcoms outside of “Big Network” pressures—shows like Broad City and Girls are exploring the “messy gray area between friends with benefits and friends with benefits who act like a couple without ever labeling it,” and the comedy of “navigating real sexual experiences.” Sitcoms today are also quick to “embrace paradoxes,” that coincide with the reality of the target audience.
