Some users even accused Carpenter of “setting feminism back a decade.” Fans, however, argued the cover shot might be a commentary on power dynamics—or simply a cheeky, proactive image from a 26-year-old pop star embracing her pin-up persona. Adding a new layer to the discourse, Carpenter released an alternate “God-approved” (according to her Insta caption) cover. She also called out double standards in a Rolling Stone interview (the photoshoot for which was also scrutinized), saying the very content people criticize is often what they engage with most.
