Teens are staging digital protests against ICE in Roblox. It’s not the first time the kids’ game has gotten political: Roblox users protested racial injustice in 2020, and one pro-Palestine protest in 2023 was visited more than 275K times. Now, in the wake of real-life ICE raids and protests, some players have been dressing their avatar up as ICE agents, knocking down doors and “arresting” other users while conducting “border patrol” surveillance. In response, other Roblox gamers have been protesting within the game. One 17-year-old, unable to attend the ICE protests in his IRL community, staged one within Roblox’s popular Brookhaven location, named after the real-life Brookhaven, GA that’s experiencing ICE raids and protests, to make his voice heard. He explained that many young people want to attend protests but attending online ones, like those within Roblox, are often their only accessible or safe option. More protests on the platform have already been planned, with users posting date and time details on TikTok. (Teen Vogue)
