Netflix is reportedly taking “second screen” viewing into account when writing new shows. According to YouGov, 91% of all Americans occasionally glance at their phones while watching TV—and YPulse’s own data shows it’s a common routine for young people. And while it may sound odd to embrace less focused viewing, Netflix seems to have recently adjusted to these habits by enhancing its content for second screen viewing. Some screenwriters who’ve worked for Netflix report they’re being encouraged to have characters verbalize their actions more frequently, which helps viewers who may be watching the show in the background stay in the loop. It’s not clear yet if Netflix is simply adapting some of its original programming for a more passive viewing experience, or is this method becoming a key selling point of its content—but it certainly aligns with Gen Z’s streaming habits.
