“Digital detoxes” are now an industry of their own. Research shows that 47% of 18-34-year-olds view their online presence as more disruptive than beneficial for their health, and nearly 46% of Gen Z is already making efforts to cut down on screen time. (Both trends which YPulse has reported on—their complicated feelings about social media and unplugging.) It’s no secret that excessive phone use is causing negative effects on young people’s mental health, teens’ especially, but how they’re choosing to address that is another question. The market for digital detox apps was estimated at around $390M in 2023, but it is anticipated to rise to over $19B by 2032. However, there’s questions of whether these apps and retreats are merely quick fixes for a larger concern. Still, the industry is growing—while helping users establish healthier screen time habits.
