Are lunch breaks fading away?

Oct 28 2024

Are lunch breaks fading away? A survey from ezCater found that 98% of American workers deem lunch breaks vital for job performance, and say happiness and the mental refreshment are benefits of the break from work. But the shift towards remote and hybrid work has notably disrupted employees’ routines, making it challenging for some to step away from their laptops. Nearly half (47%) of Gen Z say they skip lunch breaks at least twice a week, compared to 38% of Millennials and just 18% of Boomers. Even if young workers have scheduled lunch times, 75% find themselves working instead of taking breaks. A significant number (78%) also report that inflation has affected their lunch habits, including opting for cheaper meals, not buying lunch frequently, or lowering their lunch budget.
