A new TikTok trend has Gen Z attempting to “cancel out” their parents’ votes during the election. Young people are pledging to vote to directly oppose their parents’ support for Donald Trump. While this idea may seem a bit absurd to some, it’s a playful representation of the divide that some families face regarding their voting preferences. Although technically votes can’t be canceled out, Gen Z is clearly aware of how their votes may have an impact, and a sense that their political leanings don’t align with previous gens. Though some users are creating videos with captions like, “Leaving the polls, but neither our votes canceled each other out,” acknowledging that they voted for the same person as their loved ones.
