A new professional women’s hockey league is forming—and it’s signaling a shift in attitude towards women’s sports. The Professional Women’s Hockey League will begin games in January 2024 and will be led by a board of directors including tennis legends Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss as well as the LA Dodgers’ president Stan Kasten, and vice president Royce Cohen. According to data reported by Fast Company, while USA Hockey-sponsored programs for women’s hockey has grown 34% since 2013, the popularity of women’s pro leagues haven’t been able to gain much momentum. However, the PHWL is aiming to bring attention to the sport, and with the recent sign-on of hockey star and trailblazer Hilary Knight, the future of women’s professional hockey looks brighter; she says she joined the league because “We [she and other professional women’s hockey players] wanted to build something substantial that had a lot of integrity.” (Fast Company)
