Teachers are venting on TikTok and Reddit about what chatbots are doing to the classroom. Posts from educators describe students who can’t write words unaided and hand in assignments they can’t explain, like one who “finished” textbook exercises in seconds, then struggled to put answers on the board. The backdrop is a Pew finding that 54% of U.S. teens have used chatbots for schoolwork, with one in 10 saying they do all or most of it with help from a chatbot. Teachers aren’t off the hook either, though: students are reportedly spotting ChatGPT-style handouts and garbled maps. In response, some districts are pushing back: New York City announced a one-year moratorium on all student-facing AI tools from pre-K through eighth grade, though an organizer admits the policy has holes.
