Coven Academy is Gen Alpha’s latest binge-watch obsession. Disney’s new teen fantasy series is proving short(er)-form storytelling is the way to reach Gen Alpha. (Well, duh.) The series’ format consists of 21 “chapters” at 10-15 minutes each—the perfect mix of traditional TV shows and microdramas, which we know the younger gens love. The show’s first chapter reached over 11M global views in its first week on Disney+ and Hulu, according to TheWrap. It also ranked as the top streaming series among 12-17-year-olds during its premiere weekend, according to Nielsen. Disney created buzz for the show by releasing the first chapter on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, which garnered a combined 30M social views with more than half of them on TikTok alone. Gen Alpha was raised on short-form content and vertical video, and Disney is leaning into what this younger audience wants with shorter, more digestible episodes (with lots of cliffhangers) and social content that acts as an entry point into new shows—or even as the show itself.
