Young Brits are finding community in the church bell tower.

Young Brits are finding community in the church bell tower. Many young people are picking up bell ringing to fight their loneliness—even if ringing church bells isn’t exactly relaxing. Tina Stoecklin, president of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR), says the hobby can be especially beneficial for young people because it “gets you out and talking to people and interacting with people in a really safe space.” And for young people, that social connection can be a major part of the appeal. The hobby offers a chance to make “friends for a lifetime” while creating a genuine sense of belonging. It’s also one of those rare activities that naturally bring generations together. To encourage more young people to pick up the ropes, the CCCBR recently launched a Young Bell Ringers Hub with resources and support designed to make the centuries-old activity more accessible to the next generation.
