Polyglot creators are taking over social media—but not always for the right reasons.

Polyglot creators are taking over social media—but not always for the right reasons. From monologues delivered in multiple languages to man-on-the-street conversations where creators casually switch between tongues, language fluency has become its own viral genre. One of the most famous examples is Yuji Beleza, a 28-year-old content creator (7.6M followers on IG and 11.1M on TikTok) who approaches strangers with “Where are you from? I think I can speak your language,” before launching into everything from Creole to Welsh. Even public figures are getting in on it, with the video of Mayor Mamdani speaking Mandarin, Bengali, Spanish, and more going viral. The content feels refreshingly wholesome compared to much of what fills feeds. But there’s also a performative side to it. Much like productivity hacks and Gen Z’s favorite self-improvement content, language learning (or at its most extreme, “language-maxxing”) has become a form of optimization and another way to flex for engagement.
