Gen Z’s fashion micro-trends are losing the plot.

Gen Z’s fashion micro-trends are losing the plot. Gen Z is obsessed with Nikki’s red zebra print halter top from Obsession. The top has been in and out of stock on Princess Polly for two months, prompted the brand’s first-ever presale (with a 27K waitlist!), and is reselling for $100+ on Depop and Poshmark. With Obsession being one of the biggest movies of the year and TikTokers now declaring Nikki “the Halloween costume of the season” (which we predicted!), the frenzy makes sense. But micro-trends like this move fast—and the context behind them tends to disappear even faster. In this case, Nikki’s top—which was meant to reflect her bleak, mind-controlled situation, according to Obsession’s costume designer—has been reduced to just a cute top. Carrie’s prom dress met a similar fate, becoming a popular Halloween fit rather than “a portrait of teen desperation.” But YPulse knows, at least for Gen Z, the vibe of the look has always mattered more than the lore behind it.
