Instagram’s new AI tool is giving the soft launch a glow-up. The platform’s Pixel effect lets users blur the face of a specific person or object in a Story, and Instagram is explicitly marketing it for relationship reveals: “Soft launching? We got you.” It’s formalizing a ritual Gen Z has been perfecting for years, hinting at a new partner via a stray hand or the back of a head rather than a full reveal. Per Tinder data, 26% of 18-34-year-olds in the U.K. prefer gradually revealing a partner online, citing privacy as their top motivator—and YPulse’s recent 10 Trends to Know Report called out that privacy is the new luxury in dating. Not everyone is sold, though—some users are calling the blur “humiliating” and predicting it’ll spark more arguments than it prevents, since a visibly obscured partner can read as being embarrassed about that partner. Regardless, this is the latest example of platforms building features around Gen Z’s established social rituals, rather than the rituals adapting to the platform. (Mashable)
