Gen Z is hobbymaxxing to the extreme. Gen Z’s hobbies are increasingly being linked to productivity and goal setting—like how many books they’ve read on Goodreads or how many miles they’ve run on Strava. Documenting their lives on social media is a norm, but the pressure to perform is turning their leisure time into optimizable work. (We’re calling them “jobbies.”) Cultural sociologist Sarah Pritz says that the combination of social media and tracking wearables/apps is intensifying the trend, and Gen Z’s obsession feels like an extreme now. One 23-year-old says she lost her curiosity once everything became about maximizing, and even relaxation and leisure time feel like they must have purpose now. Another 23-year-old frames her hobbies as long-term projects she’s trying to complete, saying “I don’t find it relaxing, I find it motivating,” and calling offline engagement a new status symbol.
