Pay-to-play has transformed youth sports for Gen Alpha.

Pay-to-play has transformed youth sports for Gen Alpha. While travel sports used to be for a select number of high-achieving young athletes, they’ve become the norm for kids today. A very expensive, time-consuming, high-pressure norm. Five million kids in the U.S. compete on travel teams, and they’re starting at pre-tween ages, committing families to intense practice schedules and weekends of competition away from home. Even though most kids quit organized sports by 13-years-old, and the American Academy of Pediatrics advises that intensely playing a single sport from a young age leads to burnout, stress, and injuries, parents feel a lot of pressure for their kids to participate. Fear of children being left behind physically and socially pushes them to shell out thousands a year. According to Project Play, families paid 46% more on a youth sport in 2024 than 2019, and it’s estimated that youth sports generate $40 billion in annual revenue (twice as much as the NFL). Post-pandemic, privately owned sports clubs have boomed, accelerated by private investment firms who have made massive profits off a new network of sports competition for the next generation.
