The subject (Reddit) has become self-aware (added post read-outs). YPulse reported on a rising content genre of podcasts all based on Reddit stories last year, and the platform is finally making a move to create this content itself. With a new “video Reddit” feature—only in testing for now—users can choose to hear a post be read aloud or watch a video with subtitles, mirroring the trend on socials where Reddit stories become the background audio to unrelated visuals. (Like ASMR without the sound or Subway Surfers, most famously.) Reddit understands that their posts have become a background noise for listeners of existing Reddit podcasts, so they’re likely hoping to keep those audiences in their app, not on YouTube or Spotify. The feature is being trialed “across select communities” to see which types of content it works best for as well, and we expect the result to be the same as the pods: AITA, true crime, and the most dramatic stories.
