For some young singles, hobbies replace dating. New York Times has dubbed this “hobbyamory”—picking up a range of calendar-packing activities and interests to fill their cup instead of spending time on dates or hookups. (Sounds like being “rich in life” to us!) It reflects several trends happening in the past few years: Gen Z is prioritizing personal growth and friendships over romance, and has a growing interest in hands-on hobbies. Whether they’re learning fiber crafts, DJing, cake decorating, chess, paddleboarding, or any number of trending “granny hobbies,” they’re finding joy, validation, and freedom outside relationships. Plus, these “side quests” often open their social lives up, connecting them with new communities and friends which fulfill their need for connection as much as a partner might. It might also be the definition of “love will come when you’re not looking for it” for this gen—their hobby groups may just be where their future relationship begins. (NYT)
