Millennials and older Gen Z are driving a travel trend of extravagant self-celebration, especially as many are delaying or skipping expensive weddings. Data from regional travel companies and Airbnb shows both “milestone birthday” trips and chateau bookings have increased in the last few years. YPulse predicted two years ago these gens would create a Joy Economy, letting themselves spend on big experiences now rather than save and wait. Hosts of these trips feel like it’s their chance to splurge—if they don’t have kids or wedding debt, and have the money to front most of the booking cost for a large group of friends to just chip in, why not?
