A fifth of Gen Z employees feel lonelier at work because of AI. According to a new study by Workday, 20% of Gen Z workers have taken time off work this year specifically because of feeling lonely or isolated. Gen Z is a massive 12 times more likely than Gen X to say they feel completely disconnected from colleagues, and twice as likely as Millennials. Automation in the office seems to be at the core of this: more than one fifth of Gen Z say AI tools made their relationships with colleagues worse and report feeling lonelier since AI tools were adopted. While AI has some positive impacts on productivity, it’s affecting young people’s mental health in new ways constantly. And even before this shift, YPulse data shows that the number of young people who say they’re often/always lonely has increased over the years—so increased workplace disconnection could be another hit.
