Some Gen Z are prioritizing tanning over sun protection. A new study from the American Academy of Dermatology found that one in seven Gen Z believe that sunscreen is more harmful for their skin than the sun—and 54% are unaware of the risks that come with sunburns. The culprit is, in part, the algorithm. More than half of Gen Z get their skincare information from TikTok or Instagram, and 64% say they’ve come across sunscreen misinformation online. Some dermatologists warn that social media narratives can cause young people to perpetuate harmful myths—like the idea that tanning without sunscreen is safe so long as they don’t burn. YPulse data shows that skincare is a daily essential for young consumers, but sunscreen falls behind other skincare products like cleansers and moisturizers, with only 40% of 13-39-year-old males and 57% of females using SPF in their routines.
