Teens in the U.K. are about to test what life looks like without social media. In a new government-led trial, around 300 teens will take part in an experiment where their app usage is either completely blocked, shut off overnight with digital curfews, or limited to just an hour a day. As the control group, some teens won’t have any restrictions at all, so researchers can actually compare how different levels of access impact their lives. The idea is coming from broader conversations across Europe on whether it should be illegal for teens to use certain social media platforms. But not everyone is convinced this trial will lead to the fix. Critics argue teens could easily get around these limits or drift toward riskier parts of the internet. Others are saying the focus should be less on restrictions and more on holding tech companies accountable for making their platforms unsafe in the first place. (BBC)
