Some British Gen Z think the idea of retirement feels unrealistic.

Apr 01 2026

Some British Gen Z think the idea of retirement feels unrealistic. New research from People’s Pension found 12% of Gen Z think pensions are pointless because they don’t believe they’ll ever get to actually retire. A third of those surveyed said the financial services industry isn’t doing a good job of explaining why saving for retirement matters, while another fifth feel the way pensions are framed makes them seem boring and completely irrelevant to their lives right now. Gen Z’s skepticism is partly a result of their distrust in financial institutions overall; a 2025 Pensions Policy Institute report shows Gen Z has significantly less trust in financial institutions than older gens. Still, experts advise Gen Z to start saving for retirement early—even in small amounts—since having more time to invest is one of the biggest advantages young people have, whether it feels that way right now or not.
