Rising health challenges are becoming a barrier to youth employment in the U.K. Data from the Health Foundation shows between 2015 and 2025, the share of all people not in employment, education, or training (NEETs) reporting health conditions that prevent them from working rose sharply from 26% to 44%. And across all 16-24-year-olds in the U.K., the percentage reporting ill health as a barrier to work has nearly doubled over the past decade, rising from 9% to 16%. According to a policy and research manager at the Health Foundation, this trend could put an entire generation at greater risk when it comes to future employment—highlighting how youth unemployment today in the U.K. is tied not just to economic conditions.
