Some authors are realizing that good writing may not be enough to attract young readers. Reading may feel like it’s having a cultural moment among Gen Z, but data from the National Literacy Trust shows only about a third of 8-18-year-olds in the U.K. say they enjoy reading for pleasure. So instead of relying solely on traditional book promotion, some writers are stepping into entertainment spaces instead. Writer Harriet Tyce gained widespread attention after appearing on The Traitors—and while she didn’t win the show, her psych thriller book sales jumped 96% while the series aired. Others are, of course, finding their audience on social media: online communities like #BookTok, with its billions of views, regularly propels authors to global bestseller status. Despite the reports on young Brits, YPulse data shows reading is one of young Europeans’ top hobbies, so authors so authors do have an audience ready to connect, if they know where to look. (Huffington Post)
