Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering have become Hasbro’s secret weapons. While competitors struggle to show revenue increases, the brand reports that one segment of their play portfolio has been steadily growing: Wizards of the Coast, the division responsible for the D&D and Magic games, and digital gaming. Magic specifically has been launching sets based on other IPs, including Marvel and Lord of the Rings, creating collectible draw and an entry point for new fans. Their Final Fantasy set was their fastest-selling pack ever, making $200M in a day. Meanwhile, tournaments and events organized around Magic have been growing, showing IRL community is helping to fuel popularity. But digital gaming has also been key for growth, with Monopoly Go! being a key example of Hasbro’s investments in online gaming as other brands lag behind. (CNBC)
