Unemployed young Brits are being told to join the army if they need a job. The partnership between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) aims to guide tens of thousands of unemployed young people into roles like engineering, cybersecurity, healthcare, and more—promising skills and opportunities to those who may not have considered the military before. The move comes as the MoD works to address a long-running recruitment and retention problem while also modernizing the military in preparation for potential conflicts. This push comes in addition to the paid military “gap year” program they’re launching. As part of the government’s broader “youth guarantee,” the MoD hopes to remove barriers that previously limited enlistment, while also addressing young people in the workforce and their ongoing concerns about pay, housing, and flexible working options.
