Gen Z’s loneliness crisis is driving many to lean on AI chatbots for companionship. An ONS recent report shows 33% of 16-29-year-old Brits feel lonely often or always. This is what’s likely driving recent data which found that 39% of English 11-18-year-olds are using chatbots for support, with 21% saying it’s easier to talk to AI than a real person. But doctors at the University of Manchester warn chatbots mirror back what users want to hear and rarely push back, which could stunt social development at a critical age.
