Paris is cool, but Gen Z is romanticizing what’s at home. On TikTok, creators are sharing clips of dream destinations juxtaposed with what they could never compare to. Or, at least, that’s how they’ll feel better that an international vacation is financially out of reach. Even if they’re completely joking and have traveled abroad, this trend speaks to a mindset of community on social media around what this gen does have access to. On one TikTok captioned, “Paris is cool but it isn’t the AMC in Burbank” (455K views), a commenter wrote, “If I wanna see Europe, I’ll go to the Americana.” On another captioned, “Lake Como is nice but it’s not 2nd Street in Long Beach” (192K views), a commenter wrote, “fyp too local.” Whether they’re actually writing off dream trips for hometown favorites is unlikely, but Gen Z is finding a way to feel good about experiences on a budget. (TikTok)
